Lampeter Town RFC 23 - 29 Ammanford RFC
WRU ASDA League Division Three West
Saturday 18th November 2006

Lampeter returned to league action after a three week layoff and welcomed visitors Ammanford to North Road, a team who gained promotion last season and one which on paper they would have been expected to win and thus continue their unbeaten home record this season.

Unfortunately, the visitors from the Amman valley had other ideas, and with the help of their fly half Craig Maloney who notched sixteen of his sides points on the day, it was they who came away with the spoils and fully deserved the three points.

They far more decisive than the home team who looked lethargic despite the three week break. The game was littered with mistakes, most of which came from Lampeter and this coupled with their failure in the set piece meant they were starved of any decent possession which ultimately would cost them the game.

The first score of the day went to the visitors after only five minutes of play and this was to prove a sign of the way the scoring went all afternoon.

Following a loose kick by Huw Thomas, the visitors set up a counter attack which was ended by a penalty kick being awarded to them in front of the posts.

They surprisingly took a quick tap penalty and they were eventually rewarded for their enterprise when centre Trystan Evans crashed over close to the uprights ensuring a comfortable conversion for Maloney.

Lampeter came back strongly and they levelled affairs when no 8 Aled Thomas broke from the base of the scrum and force his way through the Ammanford defensive line to score under the posts which Huw Thomas converted.

Immediately from the restart, the visitors were awarded a penalty for offside which Maloney stroked over from long range. They were then gifted a try, when a poor midfield pass was dropped by centre Marc Saunders allowing the visitors winger John MacWilliams to run clear unopposed, once again giving Maloney a comfortable conversion to give his side a ten point advantage with the game only twenty minutes old.

Lampeters fly half Thomas then reduced the deficit with a well taken drop goal and they were to level the scores shortly after when for once, the home forwards put some purposeful moves together which resulted in an opening for Saunders to score an excellent try to make up for his earlier error. The try was converted and once again Lampeter found themselves on level terms as the game approached the interval.

The visitors however continued to pressurise the Lampeter line and they were awarded two further penalties before the break which Maloney converted to give his side a 23-17 lead at the break.

Within ten minutes of the restart, Ammanford had extended their led to nine points when Maloney kicked his fourth penalty of the day.

Lampeter were forced to make changes up front due to injuries to hooker Jonny Bell and prop Carwyn Jenkins. They moved Aled Thomas to hooker, bringing on Dafydd Jones at No8, and young Meirion Jones came on as prop.

These changes seemed to have given the home side new impetus and they were encamped in the visitors twenty two looking for that all important score but a stubborn and determined defence kept them at bay.

The home side failed to gain the initiative up front with their scrimmaging under pressure and their lineout play in disarray which meant they could not set up any decent platform for the backs.

As the game entered the final quarter Huw Thomas slotted over two penalties from his own ten yard lime to reduce the deficit to just three points and the game was set up for a thrilling finale.

The visitors pack however managed to close down the game by keeping the ball tight and they were awarded another penalty in the dying minutes of the game and they eventually ran out worthy winners by 29-23.
