Lampter
Town RFC 35 - 5 Trimsaran RFC
WRU ASDA League Division Three West
Saturday 23rd September 2006
Last Season the visitors completed the double over the home side and they were expecting more from this game, but apart from a few glimpses of flair from their backs, they were outplayed in most departments by the youthful Lampeter side.
Trimsaran were helped by a strong wind in the first half, but their inability to control their kicks with the wind was to cost them dearly. They missed several clearance kicks with the ball running over the dead ball line.
The game was almost half an hour old before the first score came and it followed a period of concerted pressure on the Trimsaran line before eventually, referee Lee Roberts awarded a penalty in front of the posts which Huw Thomas coolly converted.
It was the same combination five minutes later, which extended Lampeters advantage as the game, approached the interval.
With two minutes of the first half remaining, Lampeter were awarded a further penalty on the half way line.A piece of quick thinking and individuality saw centre Llyr Thomas take a quick tap penalty which caught the visitors defence flat footed.Thomas raced clear and despite the efforts of the full back, he managed to get the all important touchdown close to the corner flag.
The visitors came back strongly and had it not been for some excellent covering by the Lampeter side then they might have gone in to half time with some points to show for their efforts, as it was, the score remained 11-0 to the home team.
The second half started badly for the visitors with a penalty being awarded against them for offside almost immediately from the restart.
Captain John Rhys Jones decided to go for position down the line and from the ensuing catch and drive, No 8 Aled Thomas scored close to the posts, making the conversion to Thomas a formality.
The Lampeter eight were now starting to turn the screw, especially in the scrummaging department where they managed to take two strikes against the head. Stand in Hooker Jonny Bell appears to be enjoying his new role and he seems destined to stay in that position if he carries on with form shown in the games to date.
The second row of Gary Davies and Gavin Perry are certainly providing the platform for the back row of Llion Russell, Aled Thomas and Dylan Davies, with Dylan making the step up from last seasons seconds to the first team, and his performances so far have been very encouraging.
Lampeter extended their lead with almost a quarter of the game remaining. Once again Centre Llyr Thomas took a quick tap penalty, but this time from the five yard line. His strength and power saw him crash over the try line and with Huw Thomas again successfully converting the try, the game seemed over as a contest.
To their credit, Trimsaran fought back bravely and they scored a consolation try through their winger Llyr Davies.
However, the best was saved for last. With the game fast approaching full time there was time for one last score.
From a restart kick by the Trimsaran fly half Garan Rees, the young Lampeter Prop Meirion Jones who is certainly impressing everyone at the club, collected the ball on the full, and powered his way through two tackles and despite the efforts of two more covering players, scored Lampeters fourth try and with Thomas converting to give his side a 35-5 winning margin at the final whistle.
This was an outstanding performance by the home team which all goes well for next Saturdays home encounter against Division Two East side Pill Harriers in the cup.
