Lampter
Town RFC 20 - 14 Amman Utd RFC
WRU ASDA League Division Three West
Saturday 3rd November 2007
The visitors from the Amman valley returned to North Road last
Saturday after a season in Division 3 South West last year.
Sadly it
will not be a visit worth remembering, as the game was spoilt as a spectacle
from the start of the match due to the visitors turning up without a recognised
front row which meant the game had to be played with uncontested scrums.
Without appearing
to be too cynical, this seems to be a disease that is spreading amongst visiting
sides to Lampeter, who of course are well known at having their strength in
their pack and so to counter this, they turn up and play with uncontested scrums
which obviously has an adverse affect on the home team.
On top of this,
the Amman as was the case a few weeks ago in Laugharne, tried to adopt pulling
away from the rolling maul causing the referee to award penalties against Lampeter
for obstruction.
This tactic as well
as the lack of scrimmaging only served to upset the home crowd who were witnessing
one of the worst games at North Road for many seasons.
Fly half Huw Thomas
gave the home side an early lead from in front of the posts and this was increased
after half an hour when Flanker Llion Russell crossed for his sides first and
only try. Russell took the final pass from Prop Paul Fingleton following some
excellent work by scrum half Llyr Jones.
The try went unconverted
and the visitors managed to reduce the deficit just before the break when fly
half Lewis finally managed a successful kick having missed three earlier attempts
to make the score 8-3 at the interval.
Thomas and Lewis
then exchanged early penalty kicks and the visitors were then thwarted twice
on the Lampeter line. Firstly they knocked the ball forward with the try line
beckoning and then they were penalised for holding on, again with the try line
at their fingertips.
With the game entering
the final quarter, Lewis and Thomas again slotted over penalty kicks for their
respective sides and Thomas managed his fourth of the afternoon which gave his
side an eight point lead as the game entered the final stages.
The Amman side had
not given up however, and they ensured a tense finale when they finally broke
through a weak Lampeter defence to score in the corner to reduce the deficit
to just three points, winger Herbert getting their touchdown.
Fortunately, yet
another penalty was awarded to the home side which Thomas again converted to
give him a personal tally of fifteen points for the game, and this was to prove
the final score of a dour game which Lampeter ran out winners by 20 -14.
This was certainly
a game to forget, and whilst it was pleasing for Lampeter to maintain their
unbeaten Home form and in turn record their fourth victory, unless the rule
makers get to grip and make this game of ours more appealing to the die hard
spectators who turn up week after week, then it is in danger of being ruined
by sides who seem intent on using any tactic whether legal or not to get the
victory with no thought being given to those watching on the touchlines.
Furthermore, where
is the justice in the game when a side can turn up and play uncontested scrums
and still go away with a bonus point even after losing the game?
