Llanybydder
RFC 6 - 11 Lampeter Town RFC
WRU ASDA League Division Three West
Saturday 10th November 2007
What a difference a week makes, from witnessing one of the worst
games last week against visiting Amman Utd, to watching a real cut a thrust
Local Derby which had been eagerly awaited by both clubs and sets of supporters.
The crowd which
turned up at OJ Park, Llanybydder would have been welcomed by many of the Premier
Clubs in Wales, such was the interest and anticipation in this first league
encounter between these two local sides for many years, and to quote the late
Ray Gravelle, who sadly passed away recently, West was Certainly Best last Saturday.
The game, as one
would have expected, was a very tight and tense affair and played in excellent
spirit but it was evident from early on that the visitors from North Road seemed
to want the victory more than their hosts who were defending an excellent home
record.
Fly Half Huw Thomas
had a chance to give his side an excellent start with a penalty kick from the
halfway line in the first couple of minutes, but his kick hit the upright and
was cleared.
Then the normally
reliable Barry Thomas from in front of the posts, pulled his kick which would
have given his side the first points.
The nearest both
sides came to getting the first try came after half an hour of play. Llanybydder
were awarded a five yard scrum on the Lampeter line and having dominated the
scrums in the first half, they were favourites to get the first score.
Unfortunately for
them, the scrum was not controlled well and the ball was kicked loose by scrum
half Llyr Jones and then cleared to safety by flanker Geraint Thomas who despite
being spoken to several times by the referee, had an effective and impressive
display all afternoon.
As the game approached
the interval, Lampeter were awarded a further penalty in the Llanybydder twenty
two and surprisingly, Captain Gary Davies chose to kick down the line rather
than the posts.
This decision however,
backfired with indiscipline costing the visitors enabling the home side to clear
their lines and with Huw Thomas failing again with the last kick of the half,
the teams turned around pointless at the interval.
The second half
could not have started better for the visitors. Within five minutes of the restart,
some excellent recycling and driving by the Lampeter forwards enabled the ball
to spread out wide.
Centre Heulyn Williams
did well to release the ball whilst in contact to find young winger Carwyn Gregson
who despite being held by two defenders crossed for the first try and points
of the game much to the delight of the visiting crowd.
They then extended
their lead when Thomas slotted over a penalty, although had the advantage rule
been played they could have scored their second try.
As the game approached
the final quarter, Llanybydder were down to fourteen men with a yellow card
being shown to flanker Meredith Thomas, but this did not deter them as Barry
Thomas finally found his kicking boots by converting a penalty to reduce the
deficit to just five points.
Lampeters tactics
of playing the rushed defence certainly paid dividends, with the normally effective
Llanybydder backs being nullified by not being allowed the room to show their
effectiveness and running skills.
Huw Thomas restored
Lampeters eight point lead following some indiscipline this time from the home
side but this was again cancelled out by Barry Thomas, ensuring a tense and
thrilling finale.
Despite trying to
the run the ball from all parts of the field in the dying minutes, Lampeter
held on and recorded a hard earned victory by 11 -6.
Both sides were
applauded at then end of the game for an excellent contest played in good spirit
with Rugby on the day being the winner.
