Ammanford RFC 39 - 13 Lampter Town RFC
WRU ASDA League Division Three West
Saturday 22nd September 2007
Lampeter faced their toughest test to date when they travelled
down to Ammanford Last Saturday.
The home side on
the back of two victories already this season, one of which was an emphatic
victory away to Pembroke Dock Quins, would surely go in to the game high in
confidence and with the knowledge that a good win at home would see them top
the league after three weeks of the season.
From the off, the
home side played with purpose and power with the backs interlinking cleverly
with the forwards.Lampeter did well to control the onslaught but the deadlock
was broken more out of fortune than skill.
A misjudgement in
defence by winger Tim Evans allowed Centre Alan Rees to get the final touch
and record his sides first points which was converted by Craig Maloney.
Lampeter came back
strongly with the forwards under the guidance of captain Gary Davies very much
holding their own against a pack strengthened by the return of ex Pontypridd
front rower Aled Griffiths.
They were awarded
for their endeavours when Huw Thomas slotted over a penalty but this was soon
cancelled out by two well taken kicks by Maloney for the home side.
Thomas kept his
side within touching distance with his second kick of the game but
with the game fast approaching the interval, another piece of uncertainty in
the Lampeter defence saw the ball being overturned by the home side and released
to their dangerous back line with flying winger Gary Stephens crossing in the
corner.
This was closely
followed by a burst of pace by full back Mathew Fisher which left the Lampeter
defence standing and ensured the hosts went in with a comfortable lead of 27-6
at the interval.
The game was settled
as a contest with fifteen minutes of the restart with Ammanford scoring two
further well taken tries.Their strong straight running and the ability to offload
in the tackle enabled scrum half Ioan Jones and hooker Jason Rosser to get the
touchdowns.
With almost twenty
minutes of the game remaining, Lampeter were now playing for pride and whilst
most sides would have given up the ghost, to their credit they held firm.
There were some
impressive performances in both defence and attack from the back row of Aled
Thomas, Llion Russell and Geraint Thomas and fly half Huw Thomas was kept busy
on the back foot defending heroically from a rampant set of home forwards.
Lampeter did finally
get their just reward when they controlled a five yard scrum and youngster Gareth
Evans making his debut in the first fifteen managing to get the final touchdown
which Thomas converted.
The visiting pack
had shown they could certainly compete with the home eight, but they could not
match the speed, handling and support play of an Ammanford side who after this
convincing win of 39-13 now sit proudly on top of Div 3 West after the first
three fixtures of the season.
Whilst the result
would have been disappointing for the visitors, they can feel proud of their
efforts especially in the last twenty minutes of play when they not only stopped
the flow of points against them but managed to put some sort of respectability
to the final score.
